This year the 8th International Day of Yoga was celebrated at an unprecedented scale and reach in Spain, which took place at iconic locations in 21 major cities across Spain and with a participation of thousands of Yoga enthusiasts. The celebration was kicked off with the inaugural event in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, exactly one month ahead of IDY on 21st May 2022, and the following 20 events were spread out over the next 5 weeks. These events were held in close collaboration with dozens of prominent Yoga schools, diaspora associations, City Councils and local authorities.
1. May 21 : Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
The International Day of Yoga 2022 celebrations in Spain were launched by Ambassador Dinesh K. Patnaik at the inaugural event held at the iconic Gardens of Hotel Santa Catalina, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on 21st May 2022. In attendance at the grand event were the President of the Council of Gran Canaria, Mr Antonio Morales; the honorary consul of Brazil in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Joaquín Bermúdez; renowned artist Pepe Dámaso, besides numerous personalities from the world of medicine, research, arts and meditation, such as the naturalist Joaquín Araújo, UN Global 500 Prize winner in 1991.
2. June 3 : Almeria
The inaugural event in Gran Canaria was followed by the next event held in the city of Almeria in Andalusia on June 03, at the city’s Almadrabillas Park. The yoga masterclass was followed by a musical evening by a local band, which was enjoyed by around 100 participants and visitors.
3. June 5 : Cáceres
Following Almeria, the province of Extremadura witnessed Yoga celebration in the tranquil Campus Phi nestled amidst mountains in the quaint town of Acébo near Cáceres. Hindu Federations from across Europe participated in the event which took place on June 05.
4. June 6 : India House, Madrid (Curtain Raiser)
On June 06, a Curtain Raiser for the International Day of Yoga celebrations in Madrid was held at India House (Ambassador’s Residence), in which the diplomatic community in Madrid from the International Association of Diplomats in Spain (AIDE) were invited for a special yoga session and demonstration of its benefits for the physical and mental well-being, particularly relevant for the diplomats.
5. June 11 : Alicante
Alicante became the fifth venue of the International Day of Yoga celebrations, in which Ambassador Dinesh Patnaik also joined the celebration at the Las Conchas de las Explanadas on June 11
6. June 11 : Valencia
Valencia joined the International Day of Yoga celebrations with the event on the same day at the serene Jardines del Turia.
7. June 12 : Canary Islands
The International Day of Yoga celebrations were held at the Dzogchen International Dzamling Gar in Adeje, Tenerife, Canary Islands, where seven different yoga schools along with International Atiyoga foundation and ISKCON came together to celebrate Yoga.
8. June 16 : Marbella
The next event was held in sunny Marbella on June 16, at the Plaza del Mar. The celebrations included the Common Yoga Protocol, a meditation session and a classical dance performance of Bharatanatyam.
9. June 17 : Valladolid
Valladolid celebrated the International Day of Yoga at the Acera de Recoletos accompanied by a Yoga master class and Kathak music and dance show ‘Shivoham’, by the 7 member ICCR sponsored troupe led by Shri Deepak Maharaj (son of Pt. Birju Maharaj).
10. June 18 : Alicante
After Valladolid, the International Day of Yoga celebration returned to Alicante to coincide with the IXth Alicante Yoga Festival on June 18 at the Centro de Tecnificacion. The event was held in multiple halls simultaneously and saw participation of hundreds of yoga enthusiasts.
11. June 18 : Barcelona
Along with Alicante, the International Day of Yoga celebrations were also held at the Auditori Cotxeres de Sants in Barcelona in collaboration with the Indian Culture Centre. The event was accompanied by a cultural performance as well.
12. June 18 : Cantabria
Cantabria joined the International Day of Yoga celebrations on June 18 with the Yoga event held at the Casa de Las Mareas de Soano. The event included demonstration of various Yoga practices such as Ashtanga Yoga, Integral Chakra Yoga, Kundalini Yoga etc.
13. June 18 : Elche
Also on June 18, International Day of Yoga celebrations were held in the city of Elche in Valencia Community as Yoga enthusiasts gathered at the Paseo de la Estacion in Elche to celebrate the International Day of Yoga.
14. June 18 : Bilbao
Bilbao also participated in the International Day of Yoga celebrations on June 18 in Deusto Bidarte.
15. June 19 : Madrid
The main event of the International Day of Yoga 2022 celebration organized by the Mission was held in front of the Royal Palace of Spain, at the iconic Plaza de Oriente. The event included the Common Yoga Protocol, meditation, demonstration of various types of yoga and a devotional kirtan by ISKCON, in which the participants and visitors also enthusiastically joined.
16. June 20 : Guadalajara
The city of Guadalajara celebrated the International Day of Yoga at the city’s iconic Plaza España. The event was graced with the presence of Ms Ana Guarinos, Vice president of the Assembly of Castilla La Mancha province and Mr Ignacio Caballero, Councilor of the Ayantamiento of Guadalajara. The Yoga event also included a bhajan session.
17. June 20 : Granada
Also on June 20, the historic city of Granada celebrated the International Day of Yoga at the iconic Plaza de las pasiegas, with a beautiful piece of bharatnatyam, workshop on vyayam and sookshma yoga, demonstrations of unique meditation techniques besides the common yoga protocol and finally a fun filled Bollywood dance workshop. Hundreds of people, including tourists, joyfully participated in the celebration
18. June 21 : Aranjuez
On June 21, Aranjuez became the venue of the grand International Day of Yoga celebrations in which hundreds of eager Yoga enthusiasts gathered at the Calle de La Reina to celebrate Yoga. The event included Common Yoga protocol, meditation session and musical performances. The presence of the Mayor of Aranjuez, Da. Maria Jose Martinez and Councilor D. Miguel Gomez Herrero further added gravitas to the event.
19. June 21 : Fuengirola
The city of Fuengirola in Malaga became the ninteenth venue of IDY 2022 celebrations in Spain. The event was held at the Plaza de la Hispanidad and was held under the theme of “COVID-19 and the Benefits of Yoga”. The event was graced by the participation of the Mayor and other members of the City Council of Fuengirola and was covered widely by the local media.
20. June 23 : Cordoba
The historic city of Cordoba was the penultimate venue of IDY 2022 celebrations in Spain. The event there was held at the Entorno de la Calahorra, with the beautiful backdrop of the World Heritage Site the Grand Mosque of Cordoba. The event was attended by over a hundred participants, besides the representatives of the City Council of Cordoba.
21. June 24 : Jerez
The grand finale of the International Day of Yoga celebrations took place at the iconic Alcazar of Jerez on June 24. Ambassador Dinesh Patnaik highlighted the growing popularity of Yoga in Spain, as underscored by the fact that over 5 million Spaniards practice Yoga regularly and more than 5000 people in Spain have participated in the International Day of Yoga events in 2022.
